Do you need the new laptop? Do you need the faster mobile chip? Imo 5 year old chips work fine. I’m hosting loads of services off an old i3. Works perfectly fine. I have a laptop from 2014, works fine, when you run good software on it.
Yes, my laptop is ten years old. It doesn’t support nvme and its HDD is dying. I need a new one. I’m not going to throw money on a 5000 series Intel laptop with a GPU that has been out of order for five years.
It can’t handle AV1 decode even in software. It supports 4K, but not actually fast enough to play back videos in this resolution.
The HDMI port is half broken. Even if I upgraded the other parts, I’m not going to solder a new port.
I also want to support Framework and their goal of repairable and upgradable laptops
Respect for using it until it falls apart. I think a repairable laptop is a noble ideal, but I wonder if framework ones are actually that much more repairable than a regular laptop that you can open up. I’m not that familiar with their stuff so maybe you know more. Ie. With a standard laptop you can open, you can take out and replace the ram, storage, battery, keyboard, etc. Depending on how integrated the Mobo is, you might be able to replace the ports separately too.
Can you replace the CPU/GPU on the framework?
An Apple laptop doesn’t have replaceable RAM or storage because they want to upcharge on those items.
The average laptop is okay, but ports are soldered. Framework ports are all USB C internally so you actualy customize what you want and they can be plugged and unplugged
Screens are often glued on as well. But the killer feature is upgradable mobo and GPU. Nobody has supported a new generation of GPUs, if they come out with RDNA 4 upgrade for the current gen that will be a first in decades.
They already succeeded with a mobo upgrade so you could have bought an 11th gen Intel and changed to AMD or 13th gen
Do we really need more chips? There must be plenty of them lying around by now…
I want my framework laptop, and I’m considering waiting for a faster RDNA 3 mobile chip. They are currently all powered limited rx 7600 chips

Not at my house. If the packet is opened, it gets eaten immediately.
