  • Like lack of accessibility? I generally use reader mode, because it gives an actual good user experience rather than “one that doesn’t look like the 90s”. I’m not sure if it turns off JavaScript, but it clearly turns off the crap that it does. Maybe half of websites work that way, the rest I either skip or click to turn off reader mode.

I just tried google, and reader mode is disabled, which is a problem for people with accessibility issues.

Does EU have accessibility protections? Does google give the same ad filled, cluttered, crap as the rest of us? What if you try reader mode

  • One of the points here was those syntaxes no longer work

    • search engines are usually free text, with no concept about fields
    • the syntax you specify usually depends on specific sites implementing “filtering” which is usually a lot more annoying to use, and people here complaining that no longer works. Plus that’s limited to a specific site
    • google search specifically, used to accept syntax like quotes to match a phrase and plus or minus to indicate required presence or absence, but those no longer work.
    • certainly part of it is merchandisers using SEO for greater attention rather than better match

I’m currently looking for a new light fixture and haven’t yet found the magical search phrase to get there or a site with filtering that works. Of course it may not exist but all my attempted searches so far return random junk, so I don’t even know

  • Oh man, I did not need to read this now ……

I have people coming over today. They cancelled on a previous weekend and are hemming and hawing. The event is that I have a smoker and and want to make all kinds of new foods. I have $100 of meat, an elaborate salad and sides. Dessert also goes on the smoker. I just want someone to help eat.

This weekend’s feast is duck. Dry brined, stuffed with oranges, and smoked. Or chicken, to bribe a picky eater to come.

But it’s cold and rainy so the outdoor seating is out and I don’t really have space inside . I have an afternoon of cooking ahead that I was so excited for but have lost my motivation, dreading wasted time and money if they don’t show up

  • Why not both? More automation is definitely cool, but also make the door work better for you. I hate that style of lock

First thing I did when I moved into my current home is to replace deadbolt with a key inside with a standard deadbolt with an inside knob

    • better for emergencies - can always get out easily
    • less likely to get locked out - does not lock automatically; from outside, I must have keys to lock door as I’m leaving

  • “HealthiER”, certainly, but you’re also fighting against what people are used to.

    • I’ve had candy from various countries that is noticeably less sweet than US candy. I like that but many people miss the over-sweetness they were expecting
    • some of that international candy focuses more on savory than sweet. I wish we had those choices but most Americans probably don’t know that option exists
    • Dark chocolate is much better for you without all the added sugar and fats. I love it, but it does seem to be an acquired taste
    • if you goto an old-time candy shop, many of their recipes happen to not use as much sugar. I love molasses candy for example, much less sweet even though molasses is just sugar, but not everyone appreciates molasses flavor

But the gold prize winner is peanut butter cups! Tastes MUCH better when made out of peanuts or actual peanut butter, and dark chocolate, while also being nowhere near as unhealthy as the version we’re familiar with

  • Look into the Shortcuts app. This is Apples answer to creating automations on your iPhone. While I’ve never tried this, I see that it can send actions to the HA app. Perhaps that will do what you want

    So your options include

    • use your HA dashboard
    • create a link to an action or scene in HA
    • configure HomeKit bridge and use a HomeKit dashboard
    • configure HomeKit Bridge and use Siri
    • Use the Shortcuts app to automate the HA app
