I’ve mentioned this before but I worked at a zoo and we provided all kinds of plants to primates that were medicinal for just this reason, they’re very clever and often treat their illnesses before the keepers even know they’re sick. Not just great apes either, capuchins and lemurs that aren’t nearly as bright do it too.

Fun fact I learned this week, humans have no sense for water, we work out something is wet by combining things, like if it’s cold, if the pressure is different, if it’s moving past us, but can’t actually tell wetness.

Zoos have known this for a long while, this study from London zoo went into it in 2006, and look at the sources going back into the 90’s.

This student seems both cocky and clueless in equal measures. Fingerprints are not one of a kind, it’s a very useful method as they rarely repeat exactly but they do so are not used in isolation but rather as part of a case.

I’m not sure why he’s going on about different fingers on the same person being similar but not the same, that’s known and kind of irrelevant, you can’t convict someone with “your fingerprints are kind of similar to this one” without further convincing evidence.

Maggots are the things that breakdown dead stuff, without them you’d have dead animals and plants rotting on the ground for ages while the bacteria breaks them down slowly. I think the whole world would smell worse.

I have a friend who used to volunteer in Palestine. One of his jobs dealt with evictions. Basically if you’re a person anywhere in the world and you can go through historical documents and find a suggestion that your ancestors may have owned property in a certain place you can present that to Israel and they give the current residents, many who have owned their houses for multiple generations, some of whom have records of their relatives buying the land from the first family, 24 hours to leave.

There are troops of volunteers who will come down with a moving van and help you load your entire life in because there’s nothing else you can do.
