While this is true to a degree, there also seems to be indications that some people are more susceptible to addictive behavior than others, so some will only be inclined towards addiction if their circumstances are bad enough to make it more attractive.
I suspect this is similar to smoking causing cancer. Sure, it will likely shorten your life and cause cancer, or you can be like George Burns and smoke regularly for over 70 years.
Ultimately, it’s hard to know how susceptible you are to addiction (or smoking-related cancer) until you’ve taken the chance.
I could buy this. Also, the fonts are very jarring and intrusive. I rarely want to view what’s behind the spoiler tag, just give me a line for bias and a line for credibility, no need to be bold and a smaller font if anything, and hide the rest behind the spoiler tag if I’m interested. I already know where MBFC’s bias is, and I can adjust that to get an idea that when they say left, I think center or maybe left-center.
All of that seems pretty reasonable to me, but not if your goal is advertising…
Ditto. I think he could bring out the exasperation and pessimism that so much of my life warrants. And the transition to the good parts would be even funnier. “Oh, sorry honey, you’re why I keep going. I should have said that to him.”
I don’t get it either. I also don’t get why people would want to watch a bunch of guys scramble around a field after an oblong ball and give each other TBIs, but, hey, people can enjoy whatever they want. I don’t need to criticize them for it. So, why do you feel that need?
I’ll give you an upvote just for knowing what type of gem it was. So many South African diamond mine comments smh.
Because the way to get rid of angry, desperate people is to kill them. A better way is to get rid of the desperation, which usually gives them something to lose, which gives them less desire to engage in actions that will lose them. That’s why the War on Terror ended in a withdrawal, and not a victory. Sure, education and economic improvement isn’t very fast, but some governments seem to be more than okay spending a couple decades doing something different.
No, this won’t get rid of all of the terrorists, but how many of the wealthy, educated, married extremists with families are actually willing to risk their lives for their beliefs?
Like most questions that devolve to, “What would the world be like if people stopped doing bad things and just <insert wish here>?” pretty great. (The wish in this case is help each other with raising children.) Now if only we could get people to stop doing bad things.
The scientist Robert L. Forward discussed possible ways to handle this in his novel Rocheworld. The fiction part wasn’t about the light sail, more the general AI, life extension tech, and the aliens.
Or an r in wash. Warsh, or Warshington.
It’s generally only l before m, and b after m. So no l sound in salmon or calm, but there is in solve. Oddly, there’s no l sound in salve. Likewise, there is no trailing b sound in bomb, dumb, or lamb. Of course, it’s important to remember this is English, where the exceptions outnumber the rules, which is expected when you mash three languages together with a sprinkling of the rest of the languages.
There are a handful of commercial sailing vessels for both cargo and cruises, although they are hard to find. Here is one I found that still seems to be in service. A fairly complete list of sailing vessels can be found here. Some that are listed as currently sailing actually aren’t, but it’s still a place to look. The Royal Clipper seems to do the occasional transatlantic cruise, so that could be relevant for the OP. I didn’t take price into consideration, they could be quite expensive.
While I get that it’s not a small feat, and an unusual finale for space flight, this isn’t much higher than some skydiving packages you can book today. Still pretty ballsy for back then.
You were added to a group chat that was described to you as a way to make sure everyone got home safe. If you didn’t want to be a part of it, you could have easily waited until everyone checked in, expressed your happiness that everyone was safe and removed yourself from the chat. If you didn’t want another group forming without you being able to keep tabs, that obviously wouldn’t work. So I have to wonder about your motivations when you don’t take the easy and obvious way out.
I started having trouble with one of my knees when I was a teenager, probably due to reckless behavior. Still have chronic joint pain, with most of them, but at least I don’t get the acute knee pain anymore. I can usually tell when my knee movement is going to cause problems and stop the action before it kicks in. But it’s been at least a year since i was pain free without medication.
I’d rather drink regular water than these drinks that taste like you refilled a glass that had previously been used for a drink that actually had flavor, but enjoy it if that works for you. It’s certainly healthier than regular sodas.
It really isn’t useful if you’re viewing images, obviously, but it has has some benefit in other realms. It’s a good idea for an international market, but it will take time for everyone to buy into it and get used to it.
This is related to the prosperity gospel, which Puritans were fully on board with. If God blessed you, you would prosper. Ergo, if you were prosperous it was because God had blessed you. Likewise, if you weren’t prosperous, it was because God was punishing you. And if God is punishing you, who am I to stop it? So not only is helping your fellow man who is struggling more than you not really what God wants you to do, you’re actually interfering in God’s punishment of this person.
Or it could just be an excuse to be shitty to people who weren’t as fortunate as you.
I’m not the best guy to ask for sensitive responses, but try to take my blunt and possibly obnoxious response in a positive light.
There are a lot of people saying terrible things on the internet, to the point where only the more aggregious ones stand out. Most things will be ignored or forgotten by most people, whether they were good or bad, but I appreciated this post, and you for putting it out there.
I was trying to make a lewdly suggestive comment about vintage balls leaving them hanging. Apparently it wasn’t done very well, but it did have unintended and appreciated consequences.
