You make a fair point but as I said people keep focusing only on prompts. So when people see the takeaway that “Oh AI art isn’t copyrightable” it means very little since noone in an actual industry is going to give out a raw render (well they shouldn’t). So that is why I pointed out other tools in AI art. Like inpainting and img to img can easily make it or break how much we influence the AI. You are still using all the AI besides scribbling on paint on top of your raw then rerendering it.
Most of these court cases are primarily on prompt only images. So yes, its great we have the line of well duh if an artist does “sufficient” touch ups its back to being but the question becomes what is sufficient. Would it be sufficient if you still used mostly AI tools especially ones that give the users far more control over what they are rendering (Going to focus mostly on SD since it gives far more versatility than most of its competitors) like if you only use image to image. You posted your own art and it does it thing and bing bang boom is it copyrightable? Img to img only, probably is a low bar and may not get over the hump to be copyrightable but inpainting probably has a far more likely chance to be since it can factor in many things that the “curator” is wanting.
We are at a time when people are very hot on this topic. I just feel some artists are going a bit too insane with this, I understand their anxieties but its quite easy to lose sight and make draconian demands about this future especially the ones who are suggesting that you can copyright a style. Such suggestions are asinine and will hurt everyone including themselves.
I think your understanding of AI art tools is a bit limited. Its not all solely based on prompt. Prompts are the part of most of AI art but its not the only part of it. There are things like inpainting, outpainting, img to img, outside guidance (controlnet for SD), loras, etc. Hell that doesn’t even get into doing touch ups in other photo manipulation software where you can maybe get a general gist with art generator then draw over the output to get it closer to your real vision. Right now most people are only talking about the most bottom of the barrel stuff. Even though the user above hates that people are comparing photography to Ai art, the amount of “effort” required for the most bottom tier stuff (you posting a selfie of you doing duck lips or some other stupid trend) is at a similar level. Noone is arguing photographers don’t put a ton of skill and knowledge into their work but it seems unfair we only compare the most shit tier AI art to the true artistic end of photography instead of equating it to you take a picture of your food. Yes there is some level of effort to it but its acting like AI art requires 0 effort. You put as much effort into it as you would anything else. A use case I would love to see as the tech advances, we are seeing a ton of CGI in traditionally animated shows. Wouldn’t it be better to get a model that is trained on that specific character so you create the original scene in cgi, you run a AI art pass frame by frame, once that is done it should look far closer to the traditional style and have normal artists touch up the scene, which they already do with CGI.
I will also state since SD 2.0, they have respected robot.txt (them ignoring it prior wasn’t great).
Okay firstly I just don’t understand this last point. If the preorders are up. EK and any other waterblock maker can spend 800 dollars on this. They are meant to be shipped out in a month or 3. Its a head start in theory but I doubt EK or any company is going to seriously waste the money to make solid copper watercooling blocks.

It is literally up for preorder right now and set to be delivered in a month or 3. You literally don’t think they have production models or cad files for this thing? Like yes losing this prototype sucks and it can hamper further development since they will need a new one made but if they haven’t updated their page that is a bit questionable to me. Their consumers should be informed of how this may affect things seeing as this has been a problem for months now.

Except really I think these kind of reveals will slowly lose their relevance since we are getting tools that make it far easier to do “Deepfakes”. So it will just become the goto answer. In some ways its liberating, in other ways horrific since it will mean accountability is far harder. Hell we already have the trial run with this whole discussion of “Fake news”.

In a fucked up way, LTT covering this waterblock in the worst way possible has probably landed more eyes to Billet Labs than a proper one. Whoopie fucking doo a new custom boutique waterblock that cost nearly half the price of the card its meant to cool. I’m not here to defend the recent thing with the auctions since that is horrible and there is really no defense for it (I can understand how it could have happened but it should never have happened). I just think if there wasn’t drama this would have just been a filler episode everyone would have forgotten about since there is nothing to this block beyond it basically being made of solid copper and cools both the cpu and gpu at the same time. Its a nice work of milling and I applaud Billet Labs on their workmanship. This beyond the most recent revelation feels like such a nothing burger that has continued to grow pointlessly.

Any enthusiast is probably not going to take the youtuber “funny” man, who thought it would be a good idea to watercool his PC rack with his pool with no heat exchanger in between said rack and the pool installation or really any other dumb watercooling project they have done (that typically end in failure), as a person you should go to for your boutique custom water cooling needs. Like even in the video they were pretty blatant on how its going on the wrong gpu.
And they wouldn’t watch Linus video on it going on the wrong gpu. Those insane people can do what they want but its clear Linus is typically catering to tech “normies” they will do the occasional commercial tech but those are typically using them in ways they weren’t meant to in a rather silly/pointless deployment. I’m not here to say what Linus did to the prototype was great since really auctioning it off is pretty abhorrent but I think people are over exaggerating about him going to be the “death of a startup” when local youtuber “funny” man makes a stupid video on it installing it on the wrong gpu, which has been clearly pointed out to death in the comments even before this controversy popped up.
From Billet lab’s own website, it seems custom parts may be their bag and even though the video was negative on the monoblock (as we already established the reasons why) LTT seemed rather positive about the company, just not the product.

Think this is a case of damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Where I can see where Linus is coming from since he is quite frequently told he is out of touch as shown with his recent “house” videos. I think this could have easily swung the other way of “Wow Linus, of course the techtuber who gets free shit would advertise a 900$ waterblock, we can barely afford the gpus to put these on but he wants us to buy something that cost half the price of the already overpriced gpu its being put on”. Like custom water cooling loop are fucking cool but you get to a huge point of diminishing return. Like if we believe Billet Lab’s own results, the difference between Monoblock and EK quantum magnitude & EK-Quantum Vector is only about 3-5 degrees. People can burn their money how they want but I am pretty certain LTT has made a video saying they actually don’t encourage consumers to watercool their PCs since while its better its typically just a worse user experience (This is me paraphrasing).

maybe I’m blind deaf and stupid but the link for that say nothing about Linus knowing about the 4090 FE edition of the cooler. Just that they used a 4090 in the original video and that was bad, which I again agree with and said he probably should have used a 3090TI.
My bad, I should not have quoted a word that they didn’t use directly. But still, his final conclusion, as included in the GN video, is that nobody should buy it, and not just because of cost.
Because its a 800+ dollar of copper for a gpu and cpu cooling. Even if it was 20 degrees lower, you are spending half of what you spent on a fucking GPU on copper (that is magnificently manufactured/milled). This is so niche its just a bad product since the tolerances are so tight as shown in the video it only works on one type of gpu and/or cpu. Like its clear Billet labs is doing fantastic work on the machining but no reasonable consumer should ever buy this. This is so unreasonable and that is the point Linus is making. Its a cool project that Billet labs is making but there is almost no practical purpose for it.
Edit: Like their business model is so niche. If anything this feels like a way to spin the company in the direction of making custom milled part for commercial entities that need custom solutions. The consumer market isn’t a good market for them.
Again if you are charging 800+ dollars and again to Linus’ point of view he wasn’t aware of the 4090 FE edition of this cooler, doesn’t make sense for buyers. Most of the video they are complimenting the machining of the piece.
The best case scenario for this thing is the temps are slightly better but the experience of building with it is a
nightmare and the advantages over literally any other solution are negligible it’s a cool concept but unfortunately I think that there are very few buyers for it with that said you know if it tickles your fancy but you’re thinking yeah cool idea but maybe if it was a little more like this I wouldn’t be surprised if these guys could basically make just about anything for you they’ve definitely got the manufacturing chops

I would disagree. Linus has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth or probably say he phrases many of these discussions in very bad ways. You see this with him talking about “Is using adblocking piracy” or “Warranties are only trustworthy as the company you buy them for” (Trust me bro) or the many other controversial views he has had. Where at the face of it it looks pretty incendiary but if you ignore what he said initially and look at what he is actually meaning to say. I think the whole Billet labs’ cooler thing was a stupid video and they should have done it with a 3090 TI FE as it was meant for but Linus meant it was a “bad product” because its a $900 cooler for a last gen cooler on a 1800+ GPU. Anyone willing to spend that amount of money is probably going to spend it on the newest thing, that being the 4090. Now where this comes to bite Linus in the ass is they have a preorder for a 4090 fe (for the same price as the 3090 ti one) here Which is set to release around next month or November. Now its clear many things weren’t discussed but off the broken concepts that Linus was presented/or at least absorbed he isn’t wrong that noone would want a exotic cooler with a last gen gpu but its clear there was a major breakdown in the communication pipeline here.
Edit: Haven’t had any comments yet but I will say LTT really done fucked up with the whole auctioning off the prototype and its clear there is some issues with the organization of LTT. I don’t think they did this out of malice more they had a contact who didn’t talk to the logistics team or the team handling LTX. So out of mistake the prototype got sold even though they said they would send it back. That is pretty god damn egregious. I can understand why there was a fuck up but man they really screwed the pooch on this one.
