I think what they meant by that statement is its not configured to setup postfix as an email server. When you edit the config file (prior to runnig the docker command to build it) youre setting lemmy up to use an external email service.

I don’t make my network accessible from the internet. Anything i need remove access to i would put out on a cheap vps. If i had to do it on my home network i would use a siloed vlan with vpn access.

It can be done. It’s not worth the work involved. You could firewall off the two proxmox instances from each other and your own network. Then allow VPN access into the environment. You’ll have to allow the machines access to the Internet to get software updates. The moment you do that you’re opening the door to them making an outbound tunnel to make services publicly accessible. Then you’ve got every bot on the internet scanning your services for vulnerabilities/exploits.

Ive been using esxi (free copy) for years. Same situation. Being able to spin up virtual machines or take a snapshot before a major change has been priceless. I started off with smaller nuc computers and have upgraded to full fledged desktops.
