The problem with making carbon into butter is it will just be released once someone eats it and burns off the calories. BUT, I think you can make soap from just about any oil. So you could turn carbon from the air into fake butter, turn that fake butter into soap, and then store the soap in caves, solving any potential soap shortages for the next several millennia while also solving the climate crisis.

This is Snowden’s claim and it’s not implausible, but it’s also quite a coincidence that he’d end up in the top country for spying on the US it’s also possible that he wanted to be in Russia and simply made up the part about it just being a stopover. If Snowden was looking for asylum, there are several other countries that don’t extradite to the US. I can see why he’d temporarily be stuck in Russia, but after several years he couldn’t find any other way out? There was apparently a privately-funded attempt to get him to Iceland, but the last update on it was that they were in contact with a “third party representing” Snowden…and then nothing.

A third fact (in addition to Russiabot Greenwald’s involvement) that makes it questionable is that he eventually applied for Russian citizenship in 2020. One explanation is that he could do this to get a Russian passport and fly somewhere else with no US extradition treaty, but he hasn’t chosen to do so yet.

Beyond the point that others have made about Snowden not considering himself a hero, for me there’s two facts that I just can’t get past when it comes to Snowden:

1. He ended up in Russia somehow. Seems an odd place for a freedom fighter to end up going.
2. He first contacted Glenn Greenwald, who now spends his days showing up on Tucker’s show to spout straight Russian pro-war, anti-Ukraine Propaganda

One of these could be a coincidence, but I’ve not seen a lot of double coincidences in my life. It’s funny because I agree that the surveillance program got out of control and needs more transparency, and unlike Tucker and Greenwald, Snowden sounds like someone who truly believes what he says rather than a sleazy liar working for someone else. Emotionally I want to believe in Snowden, but I’m also a strong believer in probabilities and Snowden not acting at Russia’s behest and for some sort of personal reward seems hard to believe at this point.

I gotta disagree on the facts with this one, I don’t like Hillary either but the attempt to make the email thing criminal was in legal terms, bullshit. I agree that she broke the law, but there’s civil law (that a court can order government officials to stop breaking, but you can’t be thrown in jail for) and criminal law (that you can be thrown in jail for). The private email server was the former, not the latter.

This article around 8 paragraphs down goes through the specific criminal laws at issue, but the summary is these laws are clearly designed to punish actually stealing documents with the intent to conceal or distribute them (like say, if she took them to a private bathroom in Florida), not to dictate criminal penalties for an insecure email setup.

The reality of what happened is the FBI is a very Republican part of government, Comey is himself a lifelong Republican, and no one got more hate from Republicans than Hillary Clinton. They wanted to prosecute very badly, they just couldn’t.

This is the problem with social media. The dumbest opinions get spread not because they have a good point or even advance the discussion, but because they’re dumb and we like to look at dumb opinions for entertainment value.

The First Amendment means the government can’t punish you for speech. That’s a good rule, and yes it means that even deplorable speech shouldn’t be punished by the government. Because “deplorable” speech at various times in American history could have meant anti-slavery speech, pro-lgbt speech, anti-war speech, etc.

He clearly has no personal convictions. He acts entirely like someone who is working a job, and that job is to help Trump get elected.

But that’s because they were used to other cars. If you’re used to pressing the button, that’s where you’re gonna go in a panic. Fear basically shuts down higher thought processes so you act fast rather than carefully. So the same reflexive action you use to exit in normal circumstances would be the only thing you can conceive of if you’re on fire or drowning.

The problem is breathless AI news stories have made people misunderstand LLMs. The capabilities tend to get a lot of attention, but not so much for the limitations.

And one important limitation of LLM’s: they’re really bad at being exactly right, while being really good at looking right. So if you ask it to do an arithmetic problem you can’t do in your head, it’ll give you an answer that looks right. But if you check it with a calculator, you find the only thing right about the answer is how it sounds.

So if you use it to find cases, it’s gonna be really good at finding cases that look exactly like what you need. The only problem is, they’re not exactly what you need, because they’re not real cases.

I’m happy with this. I feel like Lemmy is an oasis of nerds in a social media world of toxic people obsessed with all the wrong things.
