help-circle

  • sort of, but i would support the mods if they tried to take action themselves.

the saddest downfall of a community was r/MURDEREDBYWORDS. used to be the funniest shit with the most beautifully crafted comebacks. but then poor moderation let politics start creeping in. the politics was fine and still funny at first. but politics gets engagement, it starts bubbling to the top, and then the quality of content took a nosedive while engagement remained high. now the community is totally derailed to the point that whenever i transitioned from reddit to fedi, i preemptively blocked whatever the parallel sub here was.

hated to see that comedy sub just become “republican bad,” and would hate to see the same happen here.

  • upvoting because i too want to see more true onion-y posts here even if it means fewer posts overall. the almost onion-y posts tend to not be funny at all, just pure depressing irony, and amass votes in a circle jerk nature, essentially making this another news sub as OP notes.

i get that “truth is stranger than fiction” but that doesn’t mean that the every time the steady progression of the west into fascism is recorded to the media it needs to be posted here. and also it’s excessively us-centric which is both boring for americans and unwelcoming to a global audience.

  • edit to add: DV has been a common abbreviation for the term long before social media algorithms were in the public eye source (Google ngrams)

i know people add it to their filters and blocks as a potentially triggering topic. more relevant on mastodon with their custom content warning messages but there are definitely more reasons to do this than “algospeak.” also prevalent on tumblr a la “CW: DV, SA,” which again can be filtered out per user. hopefully this can make u a little less disgusted :)

esit 2: this comment is not a defense of this behavior? i have had to repeat several times in this discussion that i am not defending the action, just providing a parallel narrative that i happen to know a bit about. knowing why people do a thing doesn’t make me an advocate for that behavior, it just makes me someone who paid attention lol

I can’t tell if you are purposefully taking the post literally just to be able to shoot it down.

Most people here are taking the post literally. A smaller, not insignificant but smaller, number are reading satire/irony (regarding tax exemption) into it but that does not mean there is only one valid interpretation.

Pro tip, if you need to reject the majority reading of a rhetorical post in order to defend it, that’s an indication you might be the one who is approaching in bad faith. Either that or the post is indefensible and needs rewritten.

I happen to agree with your position too, but just be careful about calling that commenter out for something as benign as taking a straightforward text literally.
