This time last year, the night before our wedding, we stayed at a cheap hotel 15 minutes away from home, ate pizza in the room and watched Top of the Pops with Mastodon. So tonight to celebrate the fact that we somehow survived the year we’ll be staying in a cheap hotel 15 minutes away from home, eating pizza in the room and watching Top of the Pops with Mastodon.

Also despite me being middle aged now, my mam and grandma sent us a ton of chocolate. So that’s the rest of the weekend accounted for.

    Happy Easter everyone!

    Edit: haul

  • Alas, not really! I have a cheap shuttle and am still trying to get the hang of “the flip” but I’ll get it eventually. I did manage a sort of wonky snowflake but that’s about it so far. Trouble is, as you know, all the other hobbies getting in the way 😄

Currently working on cross stitching a dragon from the Discworld books, knitting some crazy speckly socks and a shawl that is way behind where it needs to be to be finished on time, and planning various sewing projects. RIP my free time.

Just left another comment with links to some of the more active craft communities on here, we’d love to see what you’re working on if you ever want to share!

  • I’ve taught a few people to crochet and all it really takes is patience, and and accepting that you’re going to feel like you’ve somehow got both too many and also not enough hands for the first little while. There’s no shortage of tutorials online so it’s just a question of finding a beginner one that clicks with you and going from there.

And if you get stuck, need to ask newbie questions, or just want to show off the first few wonky rows of stitches you make to people who will understand what an achievement it is, !crochet@lemmy.ca is the community for you!

  • I’ve done this a couple times. Some reasons off the top of my head:

    • The content was specific to Mastodon and the people following me there, so there wasn’t much point posting it somewhere else.

    • It started off as a normal toot well within my server’s character limit (1500, my server is awesome that way) but then I wanted to add more thoughts later without annoying everyone who already boosted the original.

    • The individual toots in a thread are sometimes posted quite far apart, but make sense to be viewed together, e.g. standalone progress updates on the same project.

Of course there are plenty people doing it just because the microblogging is the only tool they have so they have to make the content fit. But there’s a few more potential reasons to add to the list.

  • Hey, bit late to this discussion (found it while searching for something) but since you seemed interested in a casual user’s pov:

I’m a member of quite a few Lemmy communities that are really small, and I’m very active on Mastodon. So having those small communities in a list feed on Mastodon is really handy since I don’t miss anything and can just jump in with a reply on stuff without switching over to Lemmy.

I also post a lot of the same type of stuff to both platforms and sometimes it makes sense to keep that separate, but sometimes with niche interests it’s nice to be able to cross-post and get both groups of people chatting together in the comments.

Of course this is a moot point because federation between my Masto instance and Lemmy is currently broken, but it was really great before and I miss it a ton.

  • Member of my extended family had it. His mother, immediately after he was born, was advised to go for whatever the legal process is for abandoning a child to care instead. She did not take this option, and the doctors told her she was making a big mistake. That would’ve been in the early 60s.

He only lived into his forties but he was a wonderful person, creative and warm and loving, with pretty much his only failure being an overwhelming obsession with the music of Robbie Williams. Came to live with us after his mam was gone and essentially became my big brother.

At his funeral, people literally lined the streets all along the route because there were way too many to fit into the actual venue.

This story doesn’t have much to do with anything but I just like remembering him, so there you go.
