It’s important that he disabuses himself of the notion that he’s really good at this if he tried. The trying is the part that’s the challenge. They make the ability to understand part relatively easy. That’s the whole point of college.
The tip is to change his perspective and stop thinking that he’s above it. It may not be the only tip, but it’s a big one.
The world is filled with people who used to be brilliant slackers when they were young who did nothing with it.
Anyone can theoretically sit down and study for the equivalent of a university degree. Most people don’t have the motivation or discipline for that.
Half the point of the degree is that it pushes you to get it done. (The other half is verification that you did it.)
If you still can’t do it, then it isn’t so easy after all, is it? The main challenge isn’t how big your brain is. It’s actually putting in the work.
If you can’t find enough self-discipline to get through it, you’re going to regret it later.
I had the same conversation today with a family member about abortion.
“Okay. You’ve known a lot of women in your life. Who is getting an abortion at nine months?”
Followed later by "If someone is getting an ‘abortion’ at nine months, it’s because someone is dying. Either the mother is dying or the baby has encephalitis and is going to die painfully. Nobody is going through mine months of pregnancy only to then get an abortion.
I also dropped the idea that these laws are allowing rapists to choose the mother of their children. Not all states have exceptions, and often the ones that do require a conviction of rape. Do you know how difficult a conviction of rape is? First, it’s a difficult crime to prove. Second, pleading down to sexual assault means it’s no longer rape. You know who I primarily want making that decision? The girl can ultimately decide what happened and what she wants to do about it no police involved.
This discussion is all about whether you want cops showing up to arrest doctors and recently pregnant women who may or may not have wanted to be pregnant.
Isn’t that a serious federal crime? How did they not get caught doing that?
There’s absolutely no way I’ll donate after they announced shutting down mozilla.social in favor of flushing their money down the AI path.
On the other hand, it’s the absolute least intrusive marketing, you can turn it off permanently, and it supports Mozilla who are one of the main bulwarks defending privacy.
He notably didn’t say they needed to do better for the American people or that they needed to have better policies.
He said they needed to do better to earn our trust. They don’t want to change what they’re doing; they just want to make us agree with it.
Vance over performed slightly. I’d say Walz underperformed slightly. Walz was too nice.
In the end, I think Walz wins by a fair margin. Plus Walz got the biggest two soundbites that will be played for the next week ad nauseum.
Vance had absolute shit to work with. Walz could have given the Independence Day speech.
I actually appreciate the part where Walz went off script and responded directly to Vance and the question asked. It was about Congress making the laws, and not the Vice President. They’ll likely use that to attack Walz and Harris, but I appreciated him dropping a bit of the show and just conveying reality.
The changes they were talking about require a vote from Congress. Vance dismissing that and saying it can be done through executive action should be concerning. Technically, it might be true, considering the President can just start shooting/jailing congresspeople until they vote his way. But I don’t think that’s what they wanted to express.
Backups. You should be taking regular backups whether it’s you hosting or Google. If you are, there’s really very little risk.
You’ll also have the images on the phone, which should remain long enough for the images automatically stored to get into backup storage. Personally, all my images upload from my phone automatically after I’m on WiFi for 10 minutes.
I’ve been running mine for a year or two and don’t really mess with it at all. I think I remember those breaking changes maybe 18 months ago? Was not difficult to update, and it’s been running smooth as butter since.
But… Immich does this just fine, and is pretty great at it.
It’s one of the very few times I’d agree if someone labeled it left. You know, unlike CNN or NBC or any network station.

Its Ubuntu 24.04. When I started it, it took quite awhile and then said “there as a problem, please log out”.
Now that I’ve got it started (where I’m posting from now), it still refuses to arrange my monitors. And I have no idea what this 5th, 13.3" monitor is supposed to be.
It looks like my issues are related to this hardware. I guess that’s understandable. I thought this hardware would be transparent to the OS, and apparently it’s not.
If I hit apply here, it will fail and put them back in a line. I’ll also get around 4 fps and no cursor on the additional monitors.
I installed a fresh copy of, I believe, Debian. Wayland, for some reason, couldn’t handle 4 monitors, with one above the other three.
Not the issue I expected on a fresh install. Oh, and the biggest issue I had with Windows was copied straight into Linux. I want my (single) taskbar on a monitor that isn’t my primary.
I’m currently back to Windows. It was already going to be a rough transition, and missing the ideas I was looking for while also adding complications just hasn’t made it worth it.
Mumble is another strong, open source, self-hosted option.
